PML

What is Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy?  PML is a serious and life threatening brain infection caused by a virus.  It is characterized by inflammation of the white matter of the brain.  The risk of developing PML is heightened if you suffer from a weakened immune system.

What are symptoms associated with PML?

•    Difficulty thinking
•    Trouble with balance and walking
•    Decrease in strength
•    Speech problems
•    Problems with vision

PML damage can be detected with the use of an MRI.  PML can also be diagnosed by testing for the JC virus in a brain biopsy.  There is no known cure for this rare and usually fatal disease.
